The Gate is open

At the First communion Mass Fr. Joe asked the children what it means to receive/eat the bread and wine. Kenneth, age 7, answered, "It means the gate is open."

Fr. Andrew Greeley once wrote an article about how the church sometimes puts fences around the sacraments, making them less accessible than Jesus would want. This is a welcome reversal - "The gate is open." But embedded in it is perhaps a hint that the child perceived a fence around the table, keeping him out. Let us all renew our efforts to make the church a place that welcomes children to the table of the Lord.
